Swedish (teacher) education and Europe – on possible meanings of the EU elections

A prevailing assumption within education and teacher education is that it expresses a national idea of what knowledge is to be taught and learnt in school (Baker & LeTendre).  In Sweden this means that the “Swedishness” of education is seen as a national concern and a guarantee for the continuance of a Swedish tradition, where national values like democracy and equality are at the heart of whatever subject is taught in school (Curriculum for the compulsory school system Lpo 94). In that sense you could argue that education takes a “Swedish”, rather than European or “global” shape. Yet, during the EU election campaigns in June this year, discussions on (Swedish) education in Sweden took an interesting turn. In her lecture she will direct attention to a tension between national rhetoric brought forward by (bloodless) politicians and local (flesh and blood) people whose opinions, experiences and feelings take shape in answers to questions like: What do you think? What does the European Union mean to you? She is going to argue that being a member of the European Union provides a possibility to experience familiarity within strangeness and in doing so open for new experiences.

Prof. Dr. Marianne Öberg-Tuleus is a staff member of the School of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences at the Örebro University in Sweden and has dedicated her research to teacher education.
