History and Democracy in German-American Relations

Beschreibung:

Which moment, which dream of freedom do young people from Germany and the U.S. have in mind, when they look at history and when they discuss democracy? Do they have different ideas, different concepts, different visions? How do they see American involvement in European politics? The Berlin Airlift, the division of Germany, the end of the Cold War and the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 are some milestones on that path of history. In this project we bring young people from Germany and the U.S. together. We will learn to see the world through the other ones eyes. A major focus will be on the events of 1989: How did our parents and grandparents experience the collapse of communism? How are the events described in our history books? How do we view transatlantic cooperation back then and at present? Which message(s) do we take from history, which traces did it leave in our countries, and which impact does it have on us today? What does it mean for us to be engaged as active citizens and make democracy work in our surroundings? Looking for answers to those questions will be a fascinating experience of intercultural learning, civic education and international encounter. Most of the program will be even more international: We will also meet groups from Poland, Hungary and the United Kingdom, which join a similar project at the same time and the same place.
