Twenty years ago everything seemed possible. In the communist countries people went out on the streets, they threw governments out, they changed the world. What happened to the dynamic of those years? How can they inspire us nowadays in taking over historic responsibility and getting involved in democratic engagement? What happened to the dynamic of those years?

In Lithuania they formed the Baltic Chain as an appealing symbol of resistance; in Poland they established Solidarnosc as a powerful instrument of opposition; in Germany they tore down the wall that divided a country; in Northern Ireland – away from the events of the continent – they worked towards a peaceful solution for what they called „the troubles“.

This is a project for those who want to make a difference. We will encourage and train people to make a difference in political contexts within reach. Our source will be history: What message do we take from historic events? How do we come to terms with history and accept responsibility? Our inspiration will be the international setting: How were authoritarian structures overcome? How was serious dialogue established? How did people get involved in democratic citizenship? This is a project for a personal approach on history and politics.

This is a project for those who want to do something; for those who want to share their sources of motivation and their approaches on conflicts.

• We will understand history by looking at our family biographies.
• We will compare how we deal with taboo topics of the present and the past.
• We will visit places of remembrance and read their messages for the future.
• We will get an insight on integration projects, which help us give a direction to activate our democratic engagement.
• We will train intercultural dialogue, practice conflict resolution and develop strategies for filling the idea of active citizenship with life.

Most of the program days will be combined with the German-American project „The Time to Build New Bridges“.
