The West as a whole is being challenged today. Sustainable recovery from the financial and economic crisis is far from guaranteed and may yet be interrupted by reversals. Economic and political power is shifting eastward. Global democracy promotion has encountered a backslide, even in parts of Central Asia and Eastern Europe where it had seemed to be successful after 1989. Authoritarian models of state capitalism are more openly competing with market democracies than ever before. The threat posed by Jihadism and Islamic fundamentalism has not receded. Meanwhile, Europe and America are still recalibrating their relationship.

The Centre for European Studies (CES) in cooperation with the International Republican Institute (IRI) is organising a centre right think tank forum on October 13, 2010. Its aim is to reassess the transatlantic relationship, one-and-a-half years into the Obama administration and one year after the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty. Our event will thereby aim to make a forceful point about the desirability as well as the viability of a strong and unified West, as opposed to fashionable theories about the “End of Atlanticism”.
