How do European cities cope with the generation of digital natives? What can metropolises do to raise citizens who independently and responsibly use new media technology?

These questions will be answered by the winners of the first European Award of Excellence “City for Children” on the topic of media education. The Network Cities for Children is launching the award with the support of the Robert Bosch Stiftung. It serves as the major public platform for the interests of the child in Europe. Key politicians like Frédéric Vallier (Council of European Municipalities and Regions) and Gerhard Stahl (Committee of the Regions) and excellent researchers like Professor David Buckingham (University of London) will judge the incoming projects in spring 2011. 39 major cities from 20 European countries applied with their ground breaking projects. This overwhelming response reveals that media competence is a burning issue all over Europe.
