Why the EU needs a commissioner in charge of Defence

In a context of the relentless Russian war against Ukraine, upcoming elections in the US, China’s quest to establish itself as the world’s leading power and Iran’s role as ubiquitous terrorist it is time for the European Union to take responsibility for itself.

While the competence for defense policy lies with the member states of the European Union, it is time for the President of the EU Commission to put one of the EU Commissioners in charge of Defense.

The Defense Commissioner needs at first to coordinate the support for Ukraine during the war (human, financial, military and reconstruction). A common foreign and defense policy, European Sovereignty and self-reliance in vital areas are other issues for which the Defense Commissioner should elaborate proposals.
