Europe is facing some of its most difficult challenges in the areas of economic competitiveness, energy investment and security policy. These challenges make this an important moment to reinvigorate the debate about Europe’s place in the world, and its ability to protect its interests and enhance its prosperity.

Chatham House and the Institute for Security Policy at the University of Kiel, in Germany, are launching a European strategic dialogue to explore these cross-cutting issues in the context of an increasingly competitive international environment.

Senior politicians, business leaders and other thinkers from across Europe will come together to discuss how European countries can respond individually and collectively to global challenges and develop innovative ideas.Keynote speeches and plenary sessions will be interspersed with break-out sessions held under the Chatham House Rule to facilitate an open dialogue on Europe’s most pressing questions:

• Balancing liberty and security
• Finding the right mix between soft and hard power
• Does Europe have a bright future in technology and innovation?
• Is the European social model compatible with globalization?
• What is the EU’s role in fighting climate change?
