Over the past ten years the Berlin Conference has involved individuals and representatives from civil society organizations, activists, and politicians in a dialogue on the advancement of the European process. The tenth anniversary of the Berlin Conference in 2014 coincides with the centenary of the outbreak of World War I in 1914, which precipitated the nations of Europe into an orgy of hostility and mutual extermination. One hundred years after this catastrophe, the Berlin Conference aims at assessing the state of European integration in cultural terms.

The Berlin Conference on 3 March precedes the 2014 European elections. For the first time in the history of the European Union, the European Parliament’s political groups will nominate supranational top candidates for the post of European Commission President. The leading representatives of the major European parties are invited to the conference to discuss their visions for the future of Europe with European artists and intellectuals. The second part of the conference day, entitled “1914-2014 – Consequences for the 21st century”, will be dedicated to a debate on Europe 100 years after WWI and the potential of culture for building a future Europe of Europeans instead of a Europe for Europeans. The European Parliament and the initiative “A Soul for Europe”, together with the Allianz Kulturstiftung, invite interested citizens – and more specifically: actors from civil society, business, politics, and European cities – to attend the Berlin Conference on 3 March 2014. “We all believe that today, more than ever, Europe’s culture and its fundamental values must be integrated in all levels of political work”, European Parliament President Martin Schulz said in his announcment<link http: asoulforeurope.eu node> of the Berlin Conference 2014.

The conference languages are German and English, and simultaneous translation will be provided.
