It is with great pleasure that the HUMBOLDT-VIADRINA School of Governance invites you to partake in a special evening gathering at our institution on Monday, 20th January 2014, with Pascal Lamy (president of Notre Europe; former Director-General of the World Trade Organization and member of the advisory board of the HUMBOLDT-VIADRINA School of Governance).

Following an introduction by our esteemed guest speaker, Pascal Lamy and Prof. Dr. Gesine Schwan (president of the HUMBOLDT-VIADRINA School of Governance) will speak on the subject

“For a Successful European Union: What’s next?“.

The aim of the evening’s discussion is to explore and consider precise steps that are necessary to establish a legitimate political European Union that brings together the diverging expectations of its member states and its citizens. During the continuous crisis of the last years, differing and opposing views on how to address this serious situation have not been pondered sufficiently. Intergovernmental decision-making has raised doubts on the legitimacy of the European project. In order to explain and emphasise the importance of the EU and its further integration, Pascal Lamy and Gesine Schwan will debate ideas on how this task can be achieved. After an introductory speech by Pascal Lamy and the adjacent discussion, the audience will also be invited to share their views on the topic with the speakers.
