Two strands of development are focussed in this lecture: (1) Young people´s transitions from school to work and adulthood have become increasingly protracted and risky during the last thirty years. (2) Even if national curricula and other materializations of education and youth politics reflect varying vernacular conditions and cultures, they also increasingly incorporate a global enterprise or market culture - ideas of individualism, competition and self-governance. “…like the rest of society, they (young people) face greater individualism and competitive pressures and do not necessarily share the same opportunities.” (Commission of the European Communities 2009: An EU Strategy for Youth – Investing and Empowering). The case of Sweden is taken as a point of departure for discussing how this development connects into and shapes young European’s self images, horizons of action and prospects of the future.
